Where to Cool Off This Summer in the NC Mountains

Part 2
There are many activities to enjoy in The High Country. Whether you’re in the mood to go on a hike or simply cool down in the water, there are many opportunities to chose from. Check out our favorites for your next summer adventure:
Hunt-Fish Falls
At Hunt-Fish Falls, you have the opportunity to hike and go for a swim. Along the hike, take advantage of the beautiful forest scenery. Continue along the trail until you reach the falls, stop for a moment to take in the magnificent surroundings, and then hike the rest of the way to the end of the falls to the famous Hunt-Fish swimming hole, where you can relax and cool off from the summer heat.

This waterfall and swimming hole combination is extensively larger than Hunt-Fish Falls. If you are with a big group, Elk River Falls, also known as Big Falls, might be a better option because of the size. This spot is known for the multiple opportunities offered such as fishing, hiking, and free parking. So depending on when you go, it may be a little crowded. Regardless, it’s a highly recommended place to take a day trip with your friends, family, and even pets!
Wildcat Lake

Not a big fan of hiking? If you’d rather be fishing, swimming, canoeing, or kayaking, Wildcat Lake might be a good fit for you. Just make sure to bring the proper equipment necessary for the activity of your choosing and a fishing license if you decide to fish. We also recommend packing a lunch to enjoy the picnic facilities at the lake.
Edge of the World
Just like it sounds, Edge of the World provides a full day of exciting adventure. When you book a tour with them, you can pick either whitewater rafting, kayaking, or rock climbing and rappelling. Included in the package is a delicious home cooked meal as well as comedy entertainment provided by the staff. Plus, you can even re-run the rapids multiple times throughout the day. Edge of the World provides an experience filled with laughter and enthusiasm that your entire family will enjoy. It’s the perfect place to go for a fun summer day.
Valle Crucis Park River
The land at Valle Crucis Park was obtained for the sole purpose of providing a space for community members to enjoy a multitude of outdoor activities. People can participate in a variety of weekly events at the park. If you’re interested in seeing all the Valle Crucis Park provides each week, check out their calendar of events. In addition to the multiple events, the park is located right by the Watauga River, a great place to fish with friends and family members. It also has a couple of play areas for kids as well as picnic shelters for everyone to enjoy.

If you have kids and don’t want to spend an entire day at one specific place, go over to The Tot Lot in Boone. For ages 2-11, there are a few different playgrounds that are all fenced in within one location for children to play. Within this same area, there are also baseball fields and an indoor pool.
In addition to the list in our previous blog post of fun things to do, these are just a few more notable activities to consider participating in this summer. Whether you decide to include all of these on your bucket list or just visit a few, remember to take pictures, enjoy every moment, and have fun!
