Guide to High Country’s Best Farmers Markets

The High Country is home to a handful of unique farmers markets, all filled with locally grown and produced goods, but share the same mission to bring homemade and homegrown items directly from farmers to you. Next time you’re in the area, stop by one of these markets to support the community, shop local, and have a good time.
Avery County Farmers Market
Held every Thursday from 4:30-7pm at the Old Banner Elk Elementary School, this farmers market brings together the farmers and locals throughout Avery County. Their mission is simple: to support local farmers, promote ethical standards, encourage the growth and well-being of local farms, while providing the public with a wide variety of fresh food options. In addition to simply shopping at Avery County Farmers Market, you can also get involved in supporting the cause by becoming a member of their nonprofit organization.
Spruce Pine Farmers Market
Looking for a mid-week activity? Drive over to Spruce Pine Farmers Market every Wednesday between 2-5pm to find everything from great homegrown produce to locally made items. Lip balm, aromatherapy sprays, natural soaps, fresh eggs, locally raised meats, etched glass, and strawberry rhubarb pie are just a few things you can find here. Find their blue tents set up at the Pizza Shop and Dry County Brewing Company!
Ashe County Farmers Market
Outside of the wide assortment of fresh, locally grown produce, you can wander around the market and shop for beautiful, handmade art. However, that’s not all that Ashe County Farmers Market has to offer. Whether you’re looking for freshly cut flowers or something to plant in your garden, this market has it all. Next time you are in West Jefferson on a Wednesday or Saturday, stop by between the hours of 8 am to 1 pm.
Watauga County Farmers’ Market
For quality goods grown by Boone farmers, drop by Watauga County Farmers’ Market. From May until October, you can visit this particular market every Saturday from 8-12pm. During November, they open one hour later but close at the same time. In addition to the general Saturday events, we highly recommend stopping by on the first and fifth Saturday during the months of May through October for fun Playhouse Kids Corner activities, perfect for kids ages 4 to 12.
Blowing Rock Fresh Market
Just down the from Boone is the Blowing Rock Fresh Market. Every Thursday afternoon from 4-6pm the market is open in downtown Blowing Rock. This market is in a perfect location to get your fix of local produce and explore the heart of one of the best towns in the High Country.
