Show us your Land Harbor

Six categories. Prizes. A permanent place in the community’s photo library.

Entries close Monday, October 5

We’re rebuilding how Linville Land Harbor presents itself to the world — new websites, new brochures, new everything. The one thing we can’t buy is a photograph taken by someone who actually lives here.

So we’re building the Land Harbor Photo Library, and we’re asking you to fill it.

Send us your favorite photographs taken at Land Harbor. This year’s, last year’s, or one from twenty years ago you’ve always liked. Photos in the library may appear on our websites, in the newsletter, in brochures, on social media, and in materials promoting the community and its real estate. Photographers are credited wherever it’s practical.

Prizes

Six category winners — $25 Patio Grill gift certificate each

Photographer of the Year — $100 Patio Grill gift certificate and a feature on the Land Harbor homepage

Everyone who enters — a drawing for an additional $50 certificate, winner or not

All winning photographs will be printed and displayed in the POA office with the photographer’s name. Winners announced Monday, October 19.

How to enter

  1. Pick your photos. Up to 8 total, no more than 3 in any one category.
  2. Fill out the form below. Name, address, and a few details about each photo.
  3. Upload. Attach your files right in the form. That’s it.

The permission rule

If a person is clearly recognizable in your photograph, you must have their permission before you submit it.

For most neighbors, a conversation is enough — just ask. For anyone under 18, you need permission from a parent or guardian, and this one has no exceptions.

People who appear incidentally don’t require permission: at a distance, from behind, in motion, or in a crowd where no one is the subject.

We want photographs of people enjoying Land Harbor. We’re asking for permission, not asking you to avoid people.

Want something in writing? If you’d rather have signed permission from the people in your photograph — or you’re shooting a group — download the LLH Photo Release and bring it along. It isn’t required to enter. LLH will also request a release directly whenever one is needed for a specific use.

Photo requirements

  • Format: JPEG or HEIC. If your phone shoots HEIC and you’re unsure, just upload it.
  • Size: At least 3,000 pixels on the long edge. Any phone from the last eight years clears this easily.
  • Send the original. Don’t screenshot it, download it from Facebook, or text it to yourself first — each of those strips quality we can’t recover.
  • When: Any time. Archive photos are encouraged.
  • Editing: Cropping, straightening, exposure, and color adjustment are all fine. AI-generated or AI-altered images are not permitted.

Full rules

Who may enter

Any Linville Land Harbor property owner and members of their household.

If an entrant is under 18, a parent or guardian must complete the entry form on their behalf, and any prize is issued to that parent or guardian.

Judging and criteria

Judging is done by members of the Long Range Planning Committee and assistants chosen by the Committee.

Judges see the photographs without the photographer’s name attached. Members of the Committee and anyone serving as a judge are not eligible to win.

Photo release and permission terms

By checking the agreement box on the entry form, you enter into this agreement with Linville Land Harbor Property Owners Association (“LLH”). If the entrant is under 18, a parent or guardian must complete the form on their behalf and agrees to these terms on their behalf.

1. You keep your copyright

You remain the owner of every photograph you submit. This agreement does not transfer ownership of your work and does not stop you from selling it, entering it elsewhere, printing it, or doing anything else you like with it.

2. What you are granting LLH

You grant Linville Land Harbor Property Owners Association a non-exclusive, worldwide, royalty-free, perpetual, irrevocable, and sublicensable license to use, reproduce, display, publish, distribute, adapt, crop, resize, and modify your submitted photograph(s), in whole or in part, in any medium now known or later developed, for purposes including the Photo Contest, the Land Harbor Photo Library, and the promotion, marketing, and advertising of Linville Land Harbor, its amenities, and its real estate.

Non-exclusive means you keep every right to your own photograph. Sublicensable means LLH can hand the file to printers, web developers, advertising platforms, and real estate professionals working on the Association’s behalf, because they are the ones who physically produce the materials.

3. If you select “contest entry only”

If you select Contest entry only on the entry form, the license in Section 2 is limited to running and publicizing the Photo Contest itself — announcing winners and displaying winning photographs in the POA office. Your photograph will not be added to the Photo Library and will not be used in marketing. Your entry is still judged and remains eligible for every prize.

4. People in your photographs

You confirm that every person clearly recognizable in your photograph has given permission for it to be submitted and used as described here.

For any clearly recognizable person under 18, you confirm you have obtained permission from that person’s parent or guardian. This requirement has no exceptions. A photograph of a recognizable minor submitted without parental permission will be removed and will not be published.

People who appear incidentally — at a distance, from behind, in motion, or as part of a crowd where no individual is the subject — do not require permission.

You also confirm that your photograph does not depict private property in a way that would require permission you have not obtained.

Before we publish. For a photograph containing a clearly recognizable person, LLH may need a signed release from that person before using it in advertising or real estate marketing. For any clearly recognizable person under 18, LLH requires a signed parent or guardian release before any publication at all. Without that release the photograph stays in the library unpublished. LLH requests these releases directly — collecting them is not your job.

5. Your representations

You confirm that each photograph you submit is your own original work, that it does not infringe the copyright, trademark, privacy, or publicity rights of any person or organization, and that it complies with the contest rules, including the rules on AI-generated and AI-altered images.

6. Release

You release Linville Land Harbor, its Board of Directors, committees, staff, volunteers, and agents from any claim you may have arising from the use of your photograph(s) as permitted by this agreement.

7. Indemnification

You will indemnify and hold harmless Linville Land Harbor, its Board of Directors, committees, staff, volunteers, and agents against any third-party claim, loss, or expense — including reasonable attorneys’ fees — arising from a breach of your confirmations in Sections 4 and 5. This includes any claim that a submitted photograph infringes another party’s rights, or that a person depicted in it did not give permission.

8. LLH is not obligated to use your photograph

Submitting a photograph does not mean it will be published. Most photographs in the library will never be used, and that is normal.

9. Irrevocable, with a commitment in practice

The license in Section 2 is irrevocable, which allows LLH to produce printed materials and advertising without the risk of losing the rights partway through.

As a matter of practice, LLH commits to honoring a request to stop using your photograph in new materials. Email IT-Marketing@landharbor.com and your photograph will be removed from the library and excluded from anything produced afterward. LLH cannot recall brochures already printed, signage already installed, or materials already distributed.

10. Governing law

This agreement is governed by the laws of the State of North Carolina.

What happens to submitted photos

Every qualifying photo joins the library, not just the winners

That is the honest purpose of this contest. We need photographs of Land Harbor taken by people who know the place, and a contest is how we’re asking for them. We would rather tell you that plainly than have you discover it later.

Where your photograph might appear

  • The Linville Land Harbor websites
  • The members newsletter
  • Social media
  • Printed brochures, signage, and mailers
  • Presentations and community bulletin boards
  • Calendars
  • Advertising and marketing promoting Land Harbor and its real estate

That last one is worth naming directly: LLH advertises to prospective buyers, and photographs from this library may appear in those materials.

Most photographs will never be used

A library works by having more than you need. A photograph might sit for three years and then turn out to be exactly right for a brochure cover. Nothing is wasted by being in there, and nothing is promised by being in there either.

Other members won’t see your photos

Submissions go to Linville Land Harbor, not to a public gallery. Nobody else can browse the entries. The only photographs made public are the winners, which are announced by email and displayed in the POA office.

You will be credited where it’s practical

On a website, in the newsletter, in a brochure, on a display print — your name goes with your photograph. On very small formats like a web banner or a small advertisement, a credit line may not physically fit. We are not going to pretend we took your picture.

If you’d rather not join the library

Select Contest entry only on the entry form. Your photograph is still judged and is still eligible for every prize, including Photographer of the Year and the participation drawing. It simply won’t be added to the library or used in marketing.

We expect very few people to choose this, and it’s there so that nobody feels the contest was the price of admission for something they didn’t want.

If you change your mind later

Email IT-Marketing@landharbor.com at any time. We will remove your photograph from the library and leave it out of anything produced afterward. No explanation needed and no hard feelings.

We can’t recall brochures already printed, signage already installed, or materials already sent out. Once something is in the mail, it’s in the mail.

What we collect about you

Your name, your email address, your Land Harbor lot number or address, and — only if you choose to give it — your phone number.

We need your name to credit your work, your email to send your confirmation and tell you if you won, and your lot number to confirm you’re part of the community. Phone is optional and we’d only use it if we had a question about one of your photos. We don’t ask for anything else, and we don’t share any of it.
